Sydney-based OCD treatments
We only use the best treatment for OCD: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with Exposure & Response Prevention (ERP). This usually involves:
01
Understanding OCD
At the start of therapy, we'll explore your OCD to understand the possible root causes. We'll examine why you have OCD, focusing on genetic, environmental, and personal factors. Most importantly, we'll discuss what is keeping your OCD going, and how to address this so you start to feel in control of your life from the first session.
03
Skills training
People with OCD usually underestimate themselves. Mindset training aims to improve a person's confidence that they can fight back against their OCD. Relaxation skills are also taught. These skills help a person deal with their distressing thoughts, so they don't have to rely on compulsions as much to calm themselves. Ultimately, these skills help to prepare a person for the final and most important phase of treament...
02
Goal setting
Once you understand your OCD, we'll move onto goal setting. Common goals include spending less time on compulsions (e.g. washing, cleaning, checking, ordering, asking for reassurance) and spending more time on other important activities (e.g. work, relationships, hobbies, adventures).
04
Taking back control
People with OCD are often driven by perfectionism. They're trying to be perfectly clean, safe, moral, or certain at all times. This is what we address at this stage of therapy. A person uses the knowledge and skills they've acquired to start taking sensible, calculated risks to beat their OCD. This usually involves them going into triggering situations whilst cutting back on compulsions. This is the hardest part of therapy - and the most effective at helping someone overcome OCD.
